Nail Biting Performance, 2001/2012

The play with expectations is a continuous theme in Floyer’s work. As an overt reference to private preparations for a public appearance, she staged the Nail Biting Performance at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, in 2001 and immediately preceding the official press conference of the 2012 dOCUMENTA 13 in Kassel.

'Til I Get It Right, 2005
Audio CD, amplifier, speakers, CD player or mp3 player, white connection cables
Duration 01:10:06
The words ‘falling in love’ have been edited out of country music singer Tammy Wynette’s famous song, rendering it a simple, looped repetition of ‘I’ll just keep on . . . ’til I get it right’. The effect recalls the sound produced by an analogue record player when the needle is stuck in a faulty groove of the vinyl. Floyer turns the chorus of this love song into what becomes an intense meditation on failure, persistence, and anxiety.
