Hito Steyerl Animal Spirits: Herb Sphere, 2023

Animal Spirits: Herb Sphere is a limited edition work related to Hito Steyerl’s video installation Animal Spirits. It exists in two sizes: 30 cm and 50 cm diameter. Each sphere consists of a glass globe containing living plants, complete with a powder-coated cap, LED growth lamp, hanging hardware and electrical wiring. For the initial presentation at Esther Schipper, Berlin, the artist has collaborated with Hevrîn Xelef/Flamingo e.v. community garden in Berlin-Neukölln to procure and plant the living environments. The glass spheres are being sold to raise funds for relief efforts following the severe earthquake in Turkey and northern Syria. All proceeds from these sales are donated through the Hevrîn Xelef/Flamingo e.v. organization to Jinwar, the women’s village in Rojava, Northern Syria and will be personally delivered there to build a health center.
