Tempera on paper
65,5 x 46,4 cm
This work is part of a series of portraits painted in egg tempera, a medium the artist favored. Florin Mitroi (1938–2002) is an intriguing figure in the Romanian art scene. He taught at Bucharest’s "Nicolae Grigorescu" Institute of Fine Arts for more than 30 years, but only after his death was the full extent of his own practice discovered.
An impressive body of works was found in his studio, mainly consisting of paintings and drawings, but also including photographs and metal cut-outs. His oeuvre is predominantly characterized by series of stylized portraits, usually renditions of head and torso, depicting individuals with strong black brush strokes in rigid positions, with distinct facial features and prominent hands.
