Liam Gillick Long view towards a renovated factory, 2007
Powder coated aluminium, Plexiglas
213 x 310 x 30 cm
The work is from the artist's series of free-standing screens begun in 1997. As such "Long view towards a renovated factory" continues the themes explored in Gillick’s "Discussion Islands" works begun in the mid 1990s: it designates an imaginary space where a possible dialogue could take place. The title of the structure obliquely refers to Gillick's long-standing project "Construction of One"--a book that takes up the story of a closing northern European factory. As is generally true of Gillick's sculptural works, "Long view towards a renovated factory" is not only affecting settings of a particular space, it can also be seen as an artwork encouraging conversations and discourse.
