Philippe Parreno Marquee (Esther Schipper Plans), 2006
Powder-coated steel, aluminium, Makrolon, electrical equipment, 448 silver crown mirrored bulbs, 28 fluorescent strips, fluorescent light, DMX Controller
56 x 435 x 200 cm
This is the first marquee Philippe Parreno made. It was originally produced on occasion of his 2006 exhibition at Esther Schipper. Attached to the front of the work (which was installed above the entrance to the gallery premises in Linienstrasse 85), the architectural plans of the inside exhibition space was rendered in white neon tubing. In the horizontal expanse (under which visitors would enter) 448 silver crown light bulbs form a regular pattern. Set in a grid and programmed to alternate in intensity, the glowing bulbs pulsate rhythmically. The work has been reworked for Parreno's 2015 solo exhibition at the Park Avenue Armory. Its corpus now consist of transparent panels and semi-transparent sockets, allowing an inside view of the structure.
