Francesco Gennari Autoritratto tra un Quadrato e un Triangolo / Self-Portrait in Between a Square and a Triangle, 2006
Black marble, gin
11 x 11 x 77 cm
Autoritratto tra un Quadrato e un Triangolo is a large geometric solid carved out of black Belgian marble and soaked in gin. Measuring a little under a meter, the block of polished marble morphs from a square at one end into a triangle at the other. This work manifests a recurring idea in Francesco Gennari’s oeuvre: the impossibility of representing the self accurately. For Gennari, self-portraits constitute a primary theme—he has described his exhibitions as “metaphysical landscapes” consisting of self-portraits—and are of various kind.
