Painted aluminium light box with transmounted chromogenic transparency
303,8 x 182 x 19 cm each, 2 parts
Smoke Break 2 (Drywaller) is a two-part light box. Whereas the left section depicts a man on stilts who is dressed in work clothes apparently stained with paint and plaster, the right image of the diptych shows an electric heater and a simple old-fashioned portable radio, probably dating to the late 1980s or early 1990s. The backdrop of both images is dominated by a raw dry-wall and below a standard concrete floor. The pattern created by the sections of wall is interspersed with flecks of paint and the holes for the outlets and switches remain unfinished. The work is from Rodney Graham's series of portraits of men working in the arts.
