Martin Boyce From Stars, 2022
Acrylic paint on perforated steel, aluminium, cellulose paint on cast bronze and bronze wire
166,5 x 110 x 18 cm
Martin Boyce From Stars brings together major themes of the artist's practice. The work combines a stained and oiled blue wooden panel in which seven small holes have been neatly drilled with custom-made steel letters affixed to its surface. The newly developed typography of custom-made hand-painted steel letters now includes slightly curved shapes. The stylized alphabetical lettering, which spells the words "Light Years From Stars", constitutes a new formal development based on the font the artist had conceived in 2006, in the course of his engagement with Jan and Joel Martel’s Concrete Trees, exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris.
