Almut Heise gained widespread acclaim with her large-format interior paintings such as Großes Wohnzimmer (Large Living Room, 1968) during her student days at the art academy in Hamburg. Practically overnight, she decided to abandon this success-bringing subject and henceforth devote herself almost exclusively to portrait painting.
Early paintings, such as Großes Wohnzimmer, on the other hand, are devoid of people. The work depicts a fragment of what is recognizably post-war German décor. These domestic scenes, with their cocktail chairs, small kidney tables, parade cushions, and bag lamps, are characteristic of the artist's series of interiors produced from the mid-1960s onward.
