Ugo Rondinone the borealis, 2013

In a series of sculptures Ugo Rondinone has addressed ephemeral phenomena of time, appropriating traditional methods of casting. Motifs of these sculptural series range from classical genres of art history, such as still life and nude, to redefined archetypical forms of primitive art: masks, large abstracted heads and animal figures. The small figures of horses are moulded in clay by the artist, then cast in bronze and left untreated after the casting. The titles of this series of works, functioning rather more like evokative names, refer to natural phenomena: for example, the grassland, the cosmos, the foliage, or the sunrise.
