Roman Ondak New Observations, 1995/2018
120 cuttings from a book, grouped in 78 frames
Dimensions variable
Formally and in terms of content New Observations, 1995/2018 follows the work Observations first exhibited in 2012 at documenta 13. For both pieces Ondak appropriated images and their captions from a found book and removed them from their original context. The 120 black and white photographs taken from a 1950s American book on nonverbal communication show people or objects in various constellations. The captions direct our attention to specific aspects of the images. The book from which Ondak took the clippings sought to categorize and systematize human behavior and practice.
