Introduction

The theme of Aichi Triennale 2022, “STILL ALIVE,” was inspired by a series of works entitled I Am Still Alive by the Aichi-born conceptual artist On Kawara, who continually dispatched the fact of his own existence during his lifetime using telegrams starting in the 1970s. Through the medium of art, Aichi Triennale 2022 promises encounters with uncertainty, the unknown, a diversity of values, and overwhelming beauty, while also serving as an opportunity for thinking about how we can create an ideal, sustainable future together.

Roman Ondak's Event Horizon is a sculptural installation with a processual component. 100 wooden discs are placed, one by one, on consecutive days, on corresponding pegs on the wall. Each disk has one delineation of its growth rings contoured with ink. A name of a historical event, chosen by the artist (for example, the end of the First World War) is stamped next to it, joining the history of humanity with the development staged of the oak tree. As such, systems of recording time are juxtaposed. One disk is taken from the row each day of the exhibition and placed on a peg on the wall, shortening the symbolic tree trunk and adding the year's events to the calendar of a century.
