Despite the visual wit and playfulness often associated with the larger-than-life depiction of his motifs, Tomasz Kręcicki’s subject matter remains inherently existential. The new works insistently suggest a past and present as well as a human presence: someone bought these pots, sowed the plants, cared for them, or indeed forgot to water them. They may be gifts from friends or family. Represented in various states, the depictions of plants speak of care, neglect, resignation but also resilience. Kręcicki, who lives in Poland, continues a tradition of finding a political dimension, a subtle symbolism of a subliminal subversive stance in everyday life.
