Frieze Live: Julia Scher

As part of the Frieze Live program at Regent's Park, Julia Scher will present new iterations of two works. A staging of her performance Guards, 2004, will feature a pair of elderly women dressed in her signature pink hybrid security guard uniforms roam the fair and interact with visitors.
Juxtaposing the invisibility of older women in society and the visibility afforded to security personnel, while drawing on the color pink’s playful and a uniform’s menacing connotations, Scher’s work combines an analysis of control mechanisms with feminist critique.

The accompanying installation of a conspicuously hidden vintage security camera, Hidden Camera (Rhizome), 1991/2018, further renders visible elements of surveillance at the fair, encouraging us to question the state of the world, where surveillance and bio-codeharvesting can perpetuate bias encoded in technology, aided by the power of artificial intelligence.
