Stefan Bertalan’s drawings and spatial experiments reflect an obsession with the growth and decomposition of biological structures, often creating meticulous visual records of a plant’s life cycle. His drawings are like seismographs, endlessly recording biological processes. They are half-way between a diary entry and a scientist’s notes, personal and speculative, filled with diagrams and theoretical reflections.
The artist's research papers from the 1980s are filled with sketches, diagrams and complex calculations, geometric schemes, keen observations of plants, rocks, shells, insects, animals, landscapes, but also abstract structures, nightmarish monsters and violent politics.
