Hito Steyerl Green Screen, 2023

Hito Steyerl’s large installation Green Screen consists of an artist-devised experimental LED screen wall, constructed from 81 plastic beer bottle crates, each holding 24 recyclable clear glass bottles. The artist placed an LED light in each bottle and connected them to a computer. The “pixel” count of this LED screen wall is 1944, one for each bottle. On the other side of the wall, the crates are planted with living plants. At the first presentation at Hayward Gallery in 2023, the bottles were planted with ferns and hops. At future presentations, the wall is planted with locally available indoor plants.
