Etienne Chambaud's Lapidation Piece includes an element of performance. The stones, each is inscribed with one letter or symbol, are first hurled against a wall and left in the place where they land. Thrown by the artist, the force of this action can be seen from the marks and indentations left on the wall.

If placed in a certain order, the stones could spell out the following text in capital letters: "Étienne Chambaud, Lapidation Piece, 2012 Rocks, variable dimensions A series of rocks are each inscribed with one single letter All together writing the present detailed caption of the piece consists in throwing the rocks, one by one, against a wall. The stack formed on the floor underneath, together with the remaining impacts on the wall, constitute its exhibition." The tautology of the gesture is characteristic of Chambaud's conceptual practice.
