Rosa Barba Weavers, 2022
35 mm film, steel frame, rotating motor
170 x 127 x 2 cm (66 7/8 x 50 x 3/4 in)
Suspended from the ceiling, the panel of woven film stock that makes up this work is in constant movement.
Woven around a thin steel frame from horizontal and vertical strips of celluloid, similar to how cloth or tapestry is made, the crisscrossing of the surface has a sculptural quality. The small holes along the edge of the film continue to draw attention to the function of the material--it is how the film is held and transported by projectors.
The panel combines two sections made from blue material with a central transparent section. This middle part of the panel includes short French texts and countdown numbers found on a classic film leader and reads for example: "Ne jamais couper cette amorce!" (“never cut this strip!”) and "Depart pour l'image" (start of the picture"). The leader is the section of film first threaded into the spool which would have been marked in order to give the projectionist a countdown before the feature film begins. Here the terminology signals the indebtedness of Rosa Barba's materials to the history of film projection, to film as a shared experience.
As the panel rotates slightly, light hits its surfaces, a play of reflections and refractions that subtly animates the work's immediate surroundings.
The rotating motor is not included in the sale price.
Each frame weighs 8 kg.
INSTALLATION SPECIFICATIONS:
– The rotating motor and spotlights are to be purchased separately according to the space requirements.
– The rotating motor is not required.
– If installed, the rotating motor is preferably concealed in the ceiling.
– Spotlights should be installed on 4 sides of the work.
