Sarah Buckner Studio View, 2024
Buckner’s work titled Studio View is small-format oil and charcoal on linen painting from 2024.
This work by Buckner displays an unusual perspective of a female head through a window of a studio. She used predominantly grey and brown tones for the background, and yellow for the figure whose delicate facial features remain almost invisible.
The window grilles are composed of two grey lines splitting the image into four slightly asymmetrical parts. As the window frame remains outside of the composition, the painting appears like a close-up of the face. However, Bruckner challenges the perception further as it remains uncertain if the viewer observes the scene from inside or outside, that is to say, if we are looking into or out of the window.
