Executed in oil on linen, The Passage depicts a young girl. Her face is modeled in warm ochres and deep reds, framed by short dark hair. She is set against a field of clear blue, bordered on either side by dark, roughly textured passages that press in from the edges of the composition, enclosing the figure as if glimpsed through an opening. Across the surface, the paint shifts in opacity — light breaking through at the top of her head, across her features, and along the darker edges of the composition.
