The suite of six small canvases explores a near monochrome palette, employing shades of black produced through changes in viscosity and shine. The works were produced on consecutive days, akin to daily entries in a journal, a fact noted in the subtitles which date each painting. Some canvases have rectangular motifs that evoke framing devices or windows through which outlines of plants become visible, both recurring themes in Truth Parson's iconography.
Characteristic of Sojourner Truth Parsons, the work appears to explore both optical and emotional impressions. At the same time, End of April beginning of May also obliquely recalls the legacy of Ad Reinhardt's black-on-black paintings.
