Annette Kelm Percent for Art, 2013
Percent for Art is a grid of six framed images that repeat percentage signs in different sizes on a bright red background. A larger symbol at the center, is surrounded by smaller versions of the same motif.
The symbol seems familiar to the viewer from everyday moments in supermarkets or shops - it looks like a striking retail advertisement with no discernible sales purpose and triggers an immediate association, namely the reduced availability of consumer goods.
It seems reminiscent of the work of Andy Warhol, who was the first to incorporate the symbols of consumerism, advertising, and pop culture into his practice, even making them the central motifs of his work. It evokes the consumerist and capitalist desires of our society - and in this work, the art market.
