Saâdane Afif Vice de Forme (Port de Oro), 2017

Height: 60 cm Ø 26,5 cm (cylinder)
Saâdane Afif's sculpture group consists of three geometric bodies, which can be seen as minimal-concrete works. The special black marble with its particular structure gives them a classical appearance. The expression "vice de forme" can be translated as "error of form" or as "violation of etiquette". Saâdane Afif uses the title to summarize a series of works whose starting point was an imaginary conversation between Man Ray and the French cartoonist Reiser. Afif distorts the form of Man Ray's phallic sculpture "Hommage à Priape / Pressepapier à Priape" (1920/1972) and a caricature of a nuclear power plant drawn by Reiser entitled "Psychose d'attentats" (1974). The latter, a parody of a terrorist nuclear attack, shows the formerly phallic shape of a power plant's cooling tower and reactor domes deformed, due to radioactive contamination.
