Liam Gillick Discussion Island Dialogue Platform, 1997

A double layered platform designed for the exhibition ENTERPRISE at the ICA in Boston (1997). The work designates a space where it might be possible to reconsider the potential of dialogue.

Liam Gillick’s platform works use the language of corporate architecture to question the parameters of sculpture. Constructed from anodized aluminum and Plexiglas, they are typically suspended horizontally from the ceiling, hovering over a section of the space. The term “platform” suggests not only a physical structure but a site for ideas and discourse, a notion supported by the titles typically given to the works in the series. Deliberately ambiguous, they functioning as suspended architecture that reframes the space around it.
