Ryan Gander Logic murders magic (Twenty-second sheet), 2020

Based on pages from Ryan Gander's notebooks or sketchpads, each work in the series consists of a drawing realized in graphite on paper and framed. Gander then turns it into a solid graphite sculpture by ways of casting in a mixture of graphite and Jesmonite powder—traditionally used for the production of graphite pencils and drawing sticks. The graphite marks of the drawing thus disappear in the charcoal grey surface of the cast. This process translates the work through medium and material back into itself.

At the same time, as the material transfers very easily, smudges left by the process of hanging the work onto the wall are difficult to avoid. Although the usual precautions must be taken to avoid such marks, if they do occur, they become part of the work.
