Ryan Gander Let's first look at growth - Action, 2026
The work is an enlarged stainless-steel cast of a coin bearing ‘Action’ on one side and ‘Pause’ on the other. It reproduces all the imperfections accumulated by the original coin, which the artist carried for several months in his pockets. In place of a denomination or a head of state, the word ‘Action’ spans one face, surrounded by the inscription ‘Time is your greatest asset’, repeated around the border. The coin leans against the gallery wall with ‘Action’ facing out.
The work refers to Gander’s performative project The Find, in which a large number of small coins are dispersed throughout a city’s streets. In September 2026, for instance, Gander had 16,000 small nickel coins scattered in Seoul. Some owners used them in their daily lives as a decision-making device: Action or Pause?
