8 Ball belongs to Angela Bulloch's Rules Series, an ongoing conceptual project, which the artist began in 1993.
8 Ball work employs the rules of 8-ball game, a pool (pocket billiards) game popular in much of the world, and the subject of international professional and amateur competition. Played on a pool table with six pockets, the game is so universally known in some countries that beginners are often unaware of other pool games and believe the word "pool" itself refers to eight-ball.
The work is conceptual and has no pre-defined form. The owner has the right to execute and reproduce the work in any desired form, medium or size, and the execution of the work can be undertaken independently of the artist. The purchaser will receive an A4 sheet of paper with the printed set of rules, and a signed certificate.
The works in the Rules Series are determined by sets of rules the artist has collected and assembled from various sources and contexts. The sets of rules generally list regulations of behavior within specific settings, groups or organizations. Sources and behavioral topics for the rules so far explore both the the more general: rules relating to art and the art world, technology, cinema, music, currency and politics, to the more specific or esoteric, such as bungee-jumping, waitresses, fad diets, pocket handkerchief color codes, and the Italian Mafia. There are also rules for the rules series that are also part of the series. Rules Series is often humorous, intentionally avoiding the deadpan rigor of historical Conceptual art.
The Rules Series has been widely exhibited including: Considering Dynamics and the Forms of Chaos, Sharjah Art Museum (2015); Short Big Drama, Witte De With, Rotterdam (2012); Time & Line, Städtische Galerie, Wolfsburg (2011); Information, Manifesto, Rules And Other Leaks..., Vattenfall Contemporary Art Prize, Berlinische Galerie, Berlin (2011); The Space That Time Forgot, Lenbachhaus, Munich (2008), Le Consortium, Dijon, Modern Art Oxford, Vienna Secession, The Power Plant, Toronto (all 2005) and The Turner Prize Exhibition, Tate Britain, London (1997).
