Werkstatt / Workshop presents the orderly interior of a violin-maker's studio. Based on historical photos from a Bavarian village celebrated since the seventeenth century for its exceptional violins, the image includes racks of tools and dozens of instruments in various stages of completion. With the depiction of musical instruments, Demand, who trained as a sculptor and photographs his life-sized paper models before destroying them, invokes a third sense: the work combines references to sight, touch and hearing. At the same time, the artist may suggest a relationship with the work of a violin maker who crafts object that, in the right hands, can produce great beauty.
