Thomas Demand Carpet, 2025
UV print on non-woven wallpaper
Dimensions variable
Edition of 3
Thomas Demand's wallpaper work features a pattern of blue and red circles against a lighter background. The pattern draws on the vintage carpeting in Berlin’s ICC, the International Congress Centrum. While the original carpet is grey, it has here been interpreted by Demand in a color version.
Inaugurated in 1979 in what was then West-Berlin, the ICC was at the time the most expensive structure built in the city. A prime example of the high-tech architectural style, architects Ursulina Schüler-Witte and Ralf Schüler designed the ICC as a Gesamtkunstwerk in which every detail of the building contributes to its futuristic appearance. The ICC was declared a landmark in 2019, but has been largely abandoned in recent years due to its costly upkeep.
The wallpaper was specifically designed by the artist for the presentation at Esther Schipper Berlin, March 14 – April 17, 2025.
Another wallpaper by Demand, Saal, is installed in the Metzlersaal at Städel Museum, since 2011
