Isa Melsheimer Tweeblaarkanniedood, 2022
Isa Melsheimer's ceramic draws on the artist's fascination with the plant Welwitschia, known in Afrikaans as Tweeblaarkanniedood. The delicate glazed ceramics depict the long-furrowed leaves characteristic of the plant which grows in the Namib desert of Namibia and Angola. The species has a highly distinctive morphology, consisting of just two leaves that grow continuously throughout the plant’s life. This can last several thousand years, resulting in the longest-lived leaves in the plant kingdom.
