The light intervention is created by a rectangular construction built out from the wall with a rectangular opening at its apex. Funnelling the light to create a diffuse brightness, the effect can be quite startling, as the illumination emanating from the opening, made diffuse by a filter, can nonetheless be quite focused.
The built-out form—known in geometry as a frustum, in effect a cut-off pyramid—creates the sense of a passageway opening into another space. Looking into the funnel toward the light, the concrete phenomenological effects evoke a long tradition of encounters with natural light, drawing attention to the subjectivity of perception and its metaphorical associations.
While the rectangular openings recall the windows found in ecclesiastic architecture and its tradition of controlling light (e.g. as a marker of the divine), yet also obliquely refer to the work of 20th century light & space artists constructing environments to shape light.
The title is taken from a poem by Stela do Patrocínio, a Brazilian writer who was diagnosed as a schizophrenic and kept in institutional confinement by her family between 1962 and 1992.
INSTALLATION SPECIFICATIONS
– The work is installed in a wall between two adjacent spaces.
– The front space should not have any direct light source and remain dim-lit. The rear space should only have natural light.
– Minimum required space is 34 sq. m (7,5 x 4,5 m for the darkened room).
– Both rooms should be accessible.
– Inside the wall separating the two spaces, an opening is cut and covered with a light diffusion filter (LEE 410 Opal Frost).
– Alternative installation plan: the rear space is not required if the opening cut is made in an exterior wall. The cut covered with the filter should be accessible and visible from the outside.
– The sculptural element made of painted and plastered plywood is fixed to a wall, creating an aperture of light inside the darker space.
– It is recommended to work with an interior architect to adapt the existing rooms to house the installation.
– The artwork belongs to the limited series of unique works Ne voulais prendre ni forme, ni chair, ni matière. The largest work in the series is a pavilion building, designed by the artist on a commission basis.
