This work belongs to Karolina Jabłońska’s ongoing series featuring the adventures of her pictorial alter-ego – a generalized self-portrait of the artist.
Taking a song by the British singer songwriter Kate Bush as a point of departure, the work depicts Jabłońska’s protagonist in a cloudy landscape, lying on the grass with her body carefully tucked away inside a white t-shirt. Yet, not completely hidden are the figure’s head and feet, which are rendered with a deliberate formal exaggeration. Using a palette dominated by greens, blues and pinks, the work becomes a symphony of vibrant hues. The artist’s distinct figurative style highlights the diverse range of art historical references that have informed her practice, from old masters such as Caravaggio and Titian to twentieth century painters from the New Objectivity wave, or more contemporary ones such as Maria Lassnig.
