Introduction

Ceal Floyer (March 7 – April 14, 2023)

Isa Melsheimer (April 25 – May 26, 2023)
Karin Sander (June 7 – July 1, 2023)

Karin Sander's presentation as part of The Window series centers on her site-specific work 37°32'13.199"N 126°59'17.352"E, presented in the street-facing window. Characteristic of Sander's conceptual practice, this work has a tautology at its core; the title of the work also names the location where it is installed and constitutes its only visual manifestation, black vinyl characters on the wall spelling out the coordinates of the site. The work is radically site-specific, as it cannot exist outside this one location without changing appearance. At the same time, it is endlessly adaptable: when installed at a new location, its characters will change, identifying its new geopositioning.

With this gesture of site-specificity, the work epitomizes central themes of Sander's oeuvre, namely engaging with situations, their social and historical contexts, and creating interventions in existing structures and institutions to produce minimalist works of great precision.

In addition, a selection of works from Sander's series of Mailed Paintings, Patina Paintings, and Glass Pieces will be presented throughout the other rooms of the gallery.

The three projects presented under the heading The Window at Esther Schipper SeoulCeal Floyer, Isa Melsheimer, and Karin Sander—each in their own way, create worlds for us to visit. But the direction of the gaze will go both ways: we may be looking in, onto a world, but we are also seen.

In a reciprocal gesture of bringing projects by these three Berlin-based artists to our gallery in Seoul, we are delighted to present an exhibition of the work of eight Korean artists in parallel in both the Berlin and Seoul galleries this summer, opening Friday, July 7 in Seoul and July 14 in Berlin.

Three special talks by Hyunjung Woo, Curator at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art will take place at Esther Schipper, Seoul during each presentation:

Ceal Floyer: Saturday March 11, 2pm
Isa Melsheimer: Saturday April 29, 2pm
Karin Sander: Saturday June 10, 2pm
