Introduction
The Bayerische Staatsoper is sending a clear message on the occasion of the 150th Munich Opera Festival (Münchner Opernfestspiele): the impressive rainbow installation dreams and dramas from 2001 by Ugo Rondinone is now shining brightly on the roof of the National Theatre.
The glowing rainbow, a recurring motif in Rondinone's work, combines this year's festival theme, “Myth,” with modern symbolism. In many cultures, the rainbow is considered a mythical bridge between heaven and earth, hope and transformation. At the same time, it is also a global contemporary symbol of diversity, tolerance, and the LGBTIQ+ community.
With the inscription “dreams and dramas,” Rondinone refers to the origins of all myths: they spring from the dreams, desires, and dramas of humanity. The Munich Opera Festival celebrates these great narratives which merge the human and the divine, the everyday and the supernatural. The rainbow becomes a symbol of the power of imagination and of art that transcends boundaries and creates new realities.
The installation of the artwork dreams and dramas on the roof of the National Theater was made possible by Bayerische Staatsoper innovation partner Brainlab.
