Historically, musical objects in still life painting have symbolized transience, sophistication, or the union of sight and sound. 20th century Cubists, particularly Picasso and Braque, deconstructed and reconfigured elements such as the violin's f-holes, bow, and musical notes. They experimented with structures of rhythm, repetition, and variation within painting, transforming musical abstractions into visual rhythms through the segmentation and recombination of form.
