Introduction

In an era when humanity is facing new challenges posed by big data, bioengineering and climate change, Whitechapel Gallery has invited ten groups of artists, architects and other cultural practitioners, including Simon Fujiwara, to explore the potential of collaboration and offer their visions of the future. Their experiential projects take the form of environments, models, structures and systems, incorporating artworks, objects, film and graphics.

Together with the architect David Kohn, Simon Fujiwara collaborated on the Salvator Mundi Experience, a miniature fantasy museum devoted to the story of the Da’Vinci painting which broke records in 2017 as the world’s most expensive artwork ever sold. Visitors, who can only experience this work alone, find themselves physically immersed in a near future cultural universe that is at once absurd and disturbingly plausible.
