THE MIAMI EDIT

The Miami Edit is a focused series highlighting the practices and perspectives of the artists featured at this year's Art Basel Miami Beach. We look forward seeing you at our Booth J11 from 5–7 December, 2025.

In this section, we highlight Norbert Bisky’s work Ausbruch and share his personal insights.

The title “Ausbruch” (“Outburst”) refers to an event outside the picture, as the male figures’ gazes are directed at something beyond the edge of the picture.

The figures hint at the next step, remaining in a pose, fighting or running.

Bright yellow, blue, and white traces of color refer to flying sparks, “fallout,” or an approaching storm.

Despite the bright, summery glaze colors, the faces appear serious and focused.

Something has happened or is about to happen. Nothing is clear. The next step could be decisive.

“Ausbruch” is a word that combines several different meanings:

-an eruption, for example of a volcano,

-an emotional outburst as an exceptional situation

or a collective escape of a group from a prison or a hopeless situation.

The figures stand in a landscape composed of abstract glaze color fields distributed across the picture plane on a number of levels.

The setting cannot be assigned to any specific situation and thus conveys both uncertainty and freedom.

Everything seems possible.
