Zero 10, Art Basel’s global initiative dedicated to art of the digital era, brings together leading and next-generation artists, galleries, and interdisciplinary practices exploring the relationship between art, technology, and culture.
Curated by Eli Scheinman and Trevor Paglen under the anchor theme The Condition, Zero 10 marks the initiative’s first co-curated edition and largest presentation to date.
For this year's debut in Basel, Hito Steyerl presents her large installation Green Screen.
With Green Screen, Steyerl aims to challenge both electronic screens as the ubiquitous contemporary medium with the strong dependency on tech corporations, and our own dependency, if not addiction to screens and screen-time. In an interview with The Guardian in June 2023, the artist states: “I tried to think about how we could extricate ourselves from our dependency on the large tech cartels. These cartels […] steal our data and use it for their personal ends. They polarise and poison our public discourse.” At the same time, Steyerl wishes to give more agency to plants, even if symbolically, by giving the ferns and hops an element of control of the work’s audio and video output: “I feel it’s a good idea to take humans out of the equation a bit.”
