Simon Fujiwara Who’s a Product? (Clean and White), 2023
80 x 51,5 x 44 cm (plinth)
147 x 55 x 44 cm (overall)
In this work, entitled Who’s a Product? (Clean and White), Simon Fujiwara places the character Who the Bær into the iconic Brillo Box by Andy Warhol. Who’s white silhouette, with their characteristic features and blue jeans, can be seen partially immersed in the box, drowning in a yellow liquid that spills over the top of the open box and drips down its sides. It appears the character is struggling to free himself from the box, which has his own name – Who the Bær – written on it.
Andy Warhol completed his first series of Brillo Box sculptures in 1964, replicating the commercial packaging of Brillo soap pads in the form of wooden objects covered in silkscreen prints. Exemplary works of Pop Art, works from Andy Warhol’s series of Brillo Boxes are held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
