Simon Fujiwara Who’s Strung Out? (Guitar, Autumn), 2024
Simon Fujiwara’s Who’s Strung Out? refers to Pablo Picasso’s groundbreaking sculpture of a guitar from 1912. With its title the sculpture refers to the customary dating of works from this period of Picasso’s oeuvre. "Guitar Paris, October-December 1912". Who’s Strung Out? (2024) is housed in a Plexiglass showcase, emphasizing the museum-like quality of Fujiwara’s emulated works. Picasso's cubist collage rendering a guitar is one of the most influential sculptures of the 20th century. Although the artist produced a later version made from metal sheets in 1914, Picasso realized the importance of the earlier cardboard version which he photographed and years later disassembled and packed it away. Despite requests, he didn’t exhibit it during his lifetime but left it to New York's Museum of Modern art at his death. Fujiwara recreates iconic art works by famous, historically significant artists through the perspective of his original cartoon figure Who the Bær.
