Camille Henrot Prima Ballerina, 2023
Bronze
97 x 60 x 50 cm
Edition of 5
Prima Ballerina is a sculpture in patinated bronze in which ribbons of peel spiral and coil upward above a plinth balanced on a single pivot. Each bronze is finished with a unique patina, so that no two casts share the same surface and coloration. The title refers to poise and performance, echoed in a composition held in balance.
First presented at Jus d'Orange in Fondazione ICA Milano, the series transforms orange peels and apple slices into elegant bronze sculptures. Drawing is fundamental to Henrot's artistic practice, and these works translate the gestural line of drawing into a lasting material. They capture the appearance of movement in a material traditionally associated with permanence. Historically, bronze casting has been reserved for figures of accomplishment and authority. However, Henrot applies this technique to domestic and overlooked subjects. In doing so, she lends familiar forms a new presence while retaining their everyday essence.
