Camille Henrot Misfits, 2022
Camille Henrot’s Misfits is a bronze sculpture composed of a textured, rectangular structure with openings, inset circular and triangular forms, and several separate geometric elements placed around its base. A small vessel-like form projects from the top, while the irregular surfaces and varied shapes resist a unified architectural order. The patina moves through muted greens, browns, and violet tones, emphasizing the rough and worked surface.
The sculpture brings together forms that appear related yet do not fully conform to one another. This tension reflects Henrot’s broader interest in classification, systems, and the objects that fall outside established categories. The rectangular body suggests a container or architectural fragment, while the openings and detached geometric pieces introduce ambiguity between structure, game, and assemblage.
Henrot’s use of bronze gives these disparate forms a common material identity, even as their shapes and positions remain visibly unequal. The title, Misfits, foregrounds this relationship between belonging and nonconformity: the elements occupy the same sculptural field without being resolved into a seamless whole. Through the combination of geometric construction, irregular surface, and displaced components, Henrot creates an object that remains suspended between order and fracture.
