Camille Henrot Untitled, 2022
Camille Henrot constructs an ambiguous figure through vivid green contours set against broad washes of yellow and brown. Moving freely across the canvas, the green line suggests a head, heavy breasts, elongated limbs, and other fragments of the body.
Drawing is foundational to Camille Henrot’s expansive practice, which encompasses painting, sculpture, installation, film, and video. Her works on paper and canvas develop in close dialogue, sharing the same spontaneous and intuitive approach. Henrot describes drawing as a moment in which she can think freely, without a specific goal or predetermined outcome: “If I don’t draw, I don’t really feel myself,” she has said. Ideas, images, films, dreams, and physical experiences emerge through repetition and association, moving fluidly between drawing and painting. On canvas, the immediacy of drawing remains visible in loose lines and fluid gestures, while broad fields of color and layered passages of paint give these forms a more material presence.
