Matti Braun Untitled, 2026
Batik
120 x 120 cm (47 1/4 x 47 1/4 in)
Matti Braun, Untitled, 2026, is a batik on silk work, presented in a white-lacquered maple wood frame. The work continues Braun’s sustained engagement with traditional textile techniques and the cultural knowledge embedded in them. Executed on the same silk used for his well-known silk paintings, the piece produces a markedly different surface through the batik process. The composition features approximately 400 fine colored lines, each individually drawn in wax by hand before dyeing—a level of subtlety achievable only through Braun’s long-term, dedicated exploration of the technique. The process represents a considerable technical and physical challenge, requiring great precision and many hours of concentrated labor. The wax-resist method allows the colors to unfold across the surface while preserving the intricate linear structure, creating layered depth within the textile. The hues reflect an expansive spectrum reminiscent of the rich palette associated with silk dyeing. The resulting image oscillates between strict linear order and a vibrant chromatic field. In Braun’s practice, the demanding craft process becomes both a material investigation and a reflection on the transmission and transformation of historical techniques.
